45-70 for deer?

Just spoke to my FIL and he says shots will probably be 60 yards max.
My go to for that kind of hunting is my Ruger 44 Carbine with fixed 4X using 240gr Hornady FTX hand loaded, however, I am a little recoil sensitive with 4 plates in my neck and a bunch of hardware in my shoulders.

100% agree on this. I hunt with a Henry X .44 mag using Hornady LEVERevolution 240gr rounds and have yet to have a deer within 100 yards not go down. Recoil is minimal also so follow up shots are faster. Swap that glass over and hammer some white tails with that ,44 mag.

I'm going to order the XS rail today for the Henry X 44 mag I may go out and swap the glass around to see if I'm more accurate with 1 rifle over the other... I've got some Hornady Leverevolution for the 44 mag too.

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful info! It looks like both rifles and the scope are good to go for my distance.

45/70 is my “go-to” deer rifle unless I’m hunting a area that i will be making long shots. Less damage to the deer then a conventional high powered rifle since the bullet is going slower it doesnt have the “shock wave” effect on the deer meat. It just leaves a nice hole lol.

I hunted many year with:06 but switched last year to 450 BM and really liked it. Granted probably a little less recoil but very similar overall to 45:70 and should you get a longer shot somehow you wouldn’t regret it. I did add a slip on pad and recoil is not a problem. Good luck
