Nine days. Four robberies. Eight University of Georgia students left as victims. But Mike Hunsinger bases these numbers on “context.”

“You have to be accurate in the information and look at it in the context,” Athens-Clarke County police Maj. Hunsinger said. “Robberies are down significantly from previous years, and we’ve made arrests in these cases that have been occurring.”

“I wouldn’t call it a trend,” he said. “When you’ve got a downtown location that’s close proximity to campus, then there’s a potential there for students to be victims of crime, and not just robberies.”

Hunsinger said people tend to exaggerate these occurrences without statistical knowledge.

“The thing to remember, too, is our robbery rate is down from previous years, so it’s not like this is something that’s going on and out of control,” he said. “We have had a slight up-kick in which the victims of robberies are students, and sometimes, the incidents that get reported as robberies may turn out to be something other than a robbery. You can sensationalize that students are getting robbed, but you also have to look at the reporting robbery.”
