A Tale of Two Crush Washers, or Two Crush Washers One Barrel, and other AR oddities

Know what you’re looking at when you buy someone’s personal build.

Bought here on ODT.

-castle nut on backwards

-no receiver end plate

-no detent or detent spring for the take down pin

-no buffer retainer or spring

-receiver extension threads buggered all to hell

Let's talk about why you broke the screw driver?

Also, nice Spyderco!

Radical Firearms barrel. 16”, 5.56, carbine-length gas system.

Feed ramps had burrs at the top, and horizontal grooves from crappy machining.

This pic shows the left ramp with the grooves removed by polishing by hand with stones. Right ramp has only had a quick hit with a Cratex bit.

You’ll also see that the left side of the left ramp is not straight.

This pic shows both ramps stoned to remove the grooves, and the sides of the ramp straightened.

I should have taken some more pics, but this is the final product, after polishing with felt bobs and 3 consecutively finer grits of polishing compound. Hard to get a good pic of shiny stuff like this with an iPhone……or at least it is for me.

The gas port on this barrel should be .0625”. The one on this barrel is .090”. My recommendations were a new barrel, or a Black River Tactical EZ Tune gas tube.

Shoulda taken more pics of this one.

Guy brought in a PSA PA-15 pistol. It had a pistol receiver extension on it that doesn't use a castle nut. Since there isn't a castle nut, it's just the friction and tension of the threads that keeps it in place. Customer stated that his Dad was firing it, the receiver extension backed out, allowing the receive end plate to turn, releasing the takedown pin detent spring back to Nature from whence it came. This allowed the takedown pin to fall out.

The takedown pin was placed back in the receiver, from the wrong side. To keep tension on the detent for the takedown pin, he rammed a toothpick in the hole where you would insert the detent spring. Once the toothpick was firmly jammed in there, it was snapped off flush, and colored black.

I drilled the wooden toothpick in an effort to relief pressure on the takedown pin, which wouldn't come out, even with a hammer and punch. I was finally able to drive the takedown pin out, but it took an absurd amount of force.

Removed the toothpick. Had to push it forward into the hole for the takedown pin, snap it off with forceps, push it forward again, snap it off.........repeat until it was gone.

There was some damage to both the upper and lower receiver, which I was able to correct.

New takedown pin, detent and spring. Replaced the crap-design receiver extension with a standard carbine receiver extension, along with a new castle nut and receiver endplate.

Home built gun buyer beware.

That honestly doesn't surprise me either.

Best one was a guy that bought a homebuilt AR off the ODT. It had issues. He brings it to TruPrep, where I point out what the issues are. He has no idea that I'm an ODT Mod.

He goes back home and puts negative feedback on the other dude. Makes a bunch of claims about what the "TruPrep Armorer" told him when he inspected it. He correctly quoted one thing that I stated, and the rest of it was a bunch of lies. He was lying to me about what I said!
