I have 97 GMC truck and a red air bag light came on the dash. What the hell is it for.
1. To let me I have air bags.
2. Time to change the air bag oil.
3. The air bag may go off soon.
4 What is it for and why a light. ?
5. How do I make it go away.
6. Thanks for any help.

If the airbag has been deployed and replaced, it must be reset. Otherwise the A B light will stay on. Don't know how long you have owned the truck.

Also, if the computer detects a problem in the airbag system that will prevent the a b from working, the light will stay on. It could be that it just needs resetting but it usually has to be repaired and then reset. The A B light works just like the check engine light, only it monitors the air bag system.

The ECU checks the impact sensors and does a continuity check of the airbag initiator every time the ignition is turned to the run position. It is saying their is something wrong with one of the AB components probably a broken wire or corroded connector. I can't remember if the '97s record AB faults on the DTC or not. But a check with an ODB reader might tell you where to look instead of trying to find and guess which is bad.

Or you could just put a piece of electrical tape over the AB light.
