You can choose a certain artist, genre, or create your own playlist.

There does seem to be a bug with one of the updates to the OS. You can try a different media player (non radio station) like JetAudio and see if that solves your problem.

Google Play music $9.99/month unlimited downloads or streaming, you can pick full albums from a band, unlike Pandora free where you pick an artist and in a hour hour time period you might hear that artist maybe 3 times.

But to your problem, it sounds like you have a task killer app which closes your music app when you lock the screen. If you're using one of these (essentially useless in my opinion) go into that app and add your music player to the "ignore" list. Hope that helps

Those apps aren't used as much anymore. They are built in now.

Many battery conservation apps kill network connectivity on default settings when the screen dims, I'd check into that.

Power saving mode. By default this setting is off on the Galaxy.

If you browse the android forums you'll see this is a common problem and there is no real fix because it is an OS glitch.
