Wow - this brought memories of my Dad and his pipes. He and Granddad had quite the collection although I don't remember seeing anyone with a pipe since the 70's.

Take it slow and easy. Most people start with a cheap pipe and tobacco and roast their tongue (called tongue bite) and then say they hate pipes. Sort of like buying a cheap cigar and concluding they don't like cigars. Be prepared to do a lot of relights and don't try to stoke the bowl by puffing (that's how you'll get tongue bite). It gets easier the more you learn but starting out it may seem like a lot of work.

My grandfather smoked a pipe. Probably explains my deep desire to puff myself...I tried but cigars took over.

Apparently it used to be a thing to compete with other pipe tokers to see how long you could get a single pack to last without going out? Here's a newspaper story from when he won a $25 prize for tying for 1st in a competition in 1970...

Seemed like a nice night for a smoke. Been smoking pipes for about 3 years. Only smoke a couple times a month but not much better than a nice drink and a smoke in the evening.
