If i wanted to "build" my own ar...on the cheap what would i be looking for in terms of parts....
my use of it would be mostly for messinfg around or hunting...but mostly i want to see if i can build one as well. i may not like it and not wanna mess with it again but i would at least like to try.
as far as parts are concerned...i dont want to spend alot...and i will be doing this over a period of time...maybe trading for parts i need...i want to see if i like it before i spend alot on it. if i do i will give the first build to my son and build a nice one. there is alot of info on the net but i wanted to hear firsthand from you guys on the route i want to take.

Upper with cover and forward assist already installed, barrel, flash hider and washer, gas block, gas tube, BCG, lower, complete lower build kit including fire control group and stock, forward hand grip or quad rail, barrel nut. Correct assembly tools.

when you say lower, is that already put together or the build kits are the parts for it. also is that something someone here would have or a dealer is the only place to get them.

Price wise I've seen some guys build them for about $450 at the cheapest but with you having no spare parts or tools you're probably looking at around $550-600 depending on how patient you are on finding parts.

i can be pretty patient if need be....im just not sure where to start...i guess i would need to start with finding the lower i want...

I think you should just watch a couple AR assembly videos. It'll give you an idea what you're actually looking at.

I just built my first one, but I went with nice parts.

It seems PSA has the best deals you will find on something like an assembled upper. The lower is pretty easy to put together. With the deals they've had lately you can get a running gun for around $500
