Somebody mentioned that the .220 swift didn't have a smaller projectile than the 48 grain which flies at around 4110 fps for comparison reasons. There is a polymer tip 40 grain projectile as well. Imagine what that will do. Pew Pew!

It's kinda cool to watch smoke contrails from ultralight bullets in a varmint round. Back in the '70s, you could buy the rimfire Winchester 40gr jhp as components. These were the same bullets loaded in the 22 WMR. At an estimated 3600 fps out of a 222Rem, most never made it to the target!
Greg I have 220 Swift and 22-250 loaded Nosler Varmageddon 35 Gr. The 220 Swift eeks out 100fps more then the 22-250 loads
I actually had a hot load of 220 Swift ripping jackets off.....

That's pretty fast if you ask me. I just grew up liking the .220 swift for ground hogs. Either one will get the job done on a prairie dog. Just for general knowledge what does the 22-250 do with a 48 to 50 grain projectile? Just regular loads nothing hot.

I shoot 40 gr ballistic tips in my 220 swift , its the most accurate rifle I own Remington stainless fluted barrel.

Video = youtube=Dog be gone you can not help but laugh

Neck down a .50 BMG to take a 69-grain .224" caliber bullet.

Although the one on the left, using a .17 bullet in some other big-ass case, looks adequate for 400-yard shots.

Thanks for all the input guys, some good stuff here and some stupid stuff too but hey, that’s what these threads are for...

Added a new poll option...

I recently picked up a couple of .22 Hornet rifles so I’m gonna try one out this trip...I’ll be at the ranch in a few days.

I’m thinking I will take several rifles out and do some field testing. My 22-250 has already proven itself
(last year I took 20 dogs one morning with 20 rounds out to 300yds)...but I’m going to see what the range limits are on my Volquartzen.22 mag, the CZ .22 Hornet and the Savage .17hmr.

I’m thinking .22mag (even one of my .22lr’s) for inside 100, .17 and .22 Hornet out to 200-250 and then .22-250 for the rest. Depending on wind conditions of course.

Ammo price is a factor here...when them dogs are plentiful (as they have been) then low cost ammo is nice, hence shooting the closer ones with the .22’s.

I can’t imagine what a .308 or Creedmoor hit would look like...vaporized? Maybe try out my Colt peacemaker on some close ones - that’ll be fun.
