the hornet would be fun at closer ranges, especially if you already have one. 35-40gr Vmax would do well. I'd go for that out to 250yards, maybe more if not much wind and you have time/targets. Longer shots 22-250 because of wind and distance/drop.

Yep, for closer range then .223 for under 300 yards but beyond the 22-250 is a great choice. I would take several rifles to prairie dog hunt.

Suppressed .223 would take everything under 300 yards and the noise is marginal but yeah the ,22-250 makes a boom as jeddack mentioned.

A CZ 550 with a custom Shilen bbl
 
Why not put a 2,000 dollar Night Force scope on it, stretch that yardage out to about 600-700 yards. I think it's a bargain for a prairie dog gun. You would have a nice little 4,700 dollar budget rifle.
