Best Deer Hunting Cartridge

shot my biggest buck with a .223 . Not even close to my preferred round but shot placement put the buck down in like 20 yards... He was about 40 yards away from me and we were in the deep woods stalking.

30-30 and 270 are what I grew up using then found the 7mm-08. Used that awhile and loved it, then 6.5 creed came on the scene and really like that now. Building a 6mm creed for my son but he'll definitely use the 30-30 because you can't be a real man until you've hunted with a 30-30

Shot deer and hogs with .50 muzzleloader,22-250, 243,30-06,270,7mm-08, 300 win mag, 223, 308, 6.8SPC,6mm creed, 7mm rem mag.. all of them did the job if i did my part.. If I didn't, it didn't matter how big/small the bullet was.

This picture is up in the hunting lodge of me as a kid. 30-30 with a POS tasco scope but I didn't know any better

I get it - it's all shot placement and I've killed deer with just about everything from 223 on up. My problem is that I'm color blind - can't follow a blood trail unless it's like pouring out of a bucket. My "one shot stop in the tracks" are 338 WM with 200 gr., 300 WHBY 150-165 Barnes, 300 RUM 150-165 Barnes. I've taken a lot of deer with these 3 and they work for me...might not work for others and that's okay but I know that when I touch the trigger and recover from the recoil that I'll see a deer on the ground.
I have a buddy that shoots nothing but a 243 with 100 gr soft points (shoulder shots) - he's never had a deer run. I've never knocked one down with a 243 shoulder shot shooting the same ammo.

I have a feeling that writer was going after views. To include .223 and some of those others, and not include the 30.06 is just stupid. I rarely use an .06 but half of those cartridges are very hard to find. You can walk into any store in the country and find 30.06.

I will agree with him on the 7mm-08. If I just had to choose one, that would be mine, even though I enjoy shooting a number of others, including many on that list.

Remember this is one guy’s personal list. I don’t take it seriously.

.270 has been my life long companion, but .30/06, .30/30, . 243, 7mm08, 7mm Rem mag, .35 Rem have all proven to me to be very effective.

Strangely enough, I’ve seen two bucks run more than a mile after being shot near perfect with a .308. It happened to my Dad and my brother. When we found my brother’s buck it was still alive, perfect shot behind the shoulder. I’ve heard several other stories from guys that I trust and they had similar experiences. For this reason I have bias against the .308 for deer…Yes, I suppose my bias is unreasonable and completely silly, but I can’t get past it.
