Beware the man with one gun...

I have my bases covered on the cheap. I have a 1937 Mosin Nagant, an AMT lightning 25/22, HD Remington 870, and a P89 9mm. My wife has a 742 Woodmaster, a Remington 597, Remington 11-87, and a Smith 22a.

Starting this thread has really got me thinking about my philosophy on gun ownership; and I feel a paradigm shift coming on. I am VERY seriously considering paring down my collection a bit and purchasing a CZ 527 chambered in 7.62x39 for my all-purpose rifle. It's a simple, compact, lightweight package with great accuracy, adequate power, and amazing trigger. The detachable mag is a plus, while the 5 round capacity is certainly a drawback. .308 power and trajectory would be nice, but sacrifices have to be made somewhere. If anyone is interested, below is a little spreadsheet that I threw together to rank order my top 3 choices. You could throw any rifle in here to get a good idea of where it stands in relation to others. While I weighed all categories equally, one could certain place an emphasis on attributes they feel are more important.

Rifle Weight Capacity Trajectory@200yds Energy@200yds Velocity@200yds Reload Speed Ammo Cost(per 3K rds) Simplicity Rifle Cost Magazine Cost Total Score

Well, I had all of the columns lined up when I was typing, but apparently it doesn't translate when you actually post. I apologize for the eye chart. This would've been simpler if you could attach an excel spreadsheet to a post. Hint, hint, mods.

You can get a selection of long or hand guns that all have the same controls. If, for instance, you wanted all your long guns to be semi-automatic with tang safeties you could get a Mossberg 930, a HK SLB 30/06, and a Remington Nylon 66. A battle rifle might be stretching it, but Ljungmans and Hakims are out there. You can find that in just about any configuration if you look around long enough. It is even possible for lefthand guns in most cases.

You are somewhat more limited with handguns. Pistols are viable up to using for defense in the woods. There really isn't an option in a pistol that equals revolvers used for defense against bears. If you happen to still have it in your hand, you can unload a double-action .44 mag into a bear while it munches on you. G20s might not work. Even if it did, you'd still not match the power of a 300gr .44 bullet out of any pistol. That leaves you with revolvers.

Yes it is a true quote. :thumb:

That's still a nice range though. Anything further than 300m and I need a good 7-10 round burst to hit it.

LOL Hardly any drop between 100-300. Scope is set to 200 and will only drop a few inches at 300. Flat shooters and very accurate with the right rifle.
