It usually will work due to the jumper connectors clamping on the cables rather than the battery so I would move on before starting to chase those 1 in a million scenariosif the battery is completely bad, even jumping it wont work. try pulling a battery from another car and hooking it up to your car to check.
Oh i guess i missed that, the two are not necessarily related though and if its timing belt like some are saying chances are it stopped violently with all kinds of bad noises was that maybe the case and i missed that also?You only need spark if it turns over
