I keeps a couple hundred locked away in case of major natural disasters and the like. Golds/silver will help you to maintain your wealth if the dollar were to plummet in value but it has little barter application and you cannot eat it. So use it secure your wealth but don't count on it for anything short run or an eotwawki senario. I believe keeping cash is very useful but I would never leave anything more than a twenty in my car. Just like my trunk gun is a beat up $150 shot gun I have had my car broken into in the past and don't want to risk it.
The best barter item I can think of is heirloom seeds light to carry and very valuable if we ok'd was scare.
