I get that a pump with 2 sets of barrels is the way to go. I also kinda just want a side by side for the hell of it as well.

If going for a double gun I'd look for a used Stevens 311. I think you would have a better gun possibly for less than the two you are looking at. However my disclaimer is I shot one once and really liked it.

Dove hunting is frustrating enough without handicapping yourself with a coach gun. Based on what you said absolutely the way to go is an 870 with two barrels. Don't make something that's supposed to be fun more aggravating than it needs to be. And kudos to you for making the attempt to spend some time with your dad doing things he enjoys. Good luck!
