Friend from out of state has a coyote problem. Lives in a neighborhood, neighbors are fine with him getting rid of them. Any shooting would be close range (sub 40 yards and more than likely 15-20 yards). Obviously he would be cognizant of backstop but he’s got video of them on his basketball court and one was snooping around when his daughter took the dog out before bed last week.

I was thinking a good 22lr with appropriate bullet should get the job done or thought to lend him one of my 22 Hornets. But those that have shot Coyote will a good 22lr do the job at close range? Head shot only? Any subsonic ammo that would work or HV stuff only?

Or go with 22 mag/17hmr? Or I had been thinking quiet and a 300 blackout with heavy subs (maker bullets)?

You can shoot coyotes with 22s and bring them down. At 15-20 yards you should be able to headshot most of them with 22lr.

If you've got concerns with neighbors or sound, stick to the Colibris. They're quiet like a pellet gun, but I'd say you have to go for a lung shot in with them. Not sure how good penetration would be through the skull.

He’s mainly a hunter and getting his two sons into hunting (I think they are getting Tikka 7-08 rifles for Christmas). He’s thinking to buy something specific for this use and I’ve been taking to him about suppressers so that might be in the cards.

He does have a 22lr (pretty sure a 10/22) but I wasn’t sure how big he might want to go and lots of options IMHO. 22mag or 300blackout bolt, 300 AR, etc.

Any concerns about noise or can he just shoot 22lrs out the back door? If he's in town there's another concern with the law, so again Colibri 22lr's are best for that. Very quiet.

At that range a 12 ga with a full choke and high bass 6 s will eliminate that problem without missing.
He might run off but he won’t be back

Agree with above that the best thing to do, without spending a ton of money on a new dedicated varmint rifle,
is to buy a used bolt action .22LR repeater (lever, pump, or bolt action, or semi-auto if you can confirm it works with STANDARD velocity ammo.)
Get one with a full barrel length of 20-24" which will be noticeably quieter with std-vel ammo.

Now, I have ZERO experience shooting coyotes, but I would think that if you don't need a "bang-flop" that plants them on the spot, a .22LR should be good. Heart, lungs, or spine. All will be broken from a .22LR and all will cause the animal to die shortly.

Cross bow

I can hear the difference between shooting the same ammo out of my one Ruger 10/22 with the factory 18.5" barrel and one that's got a 22" Green Mountain barrel. Longer is quieter.
