deer hunting with a 270

Take in to consideration the twist of the barrel you have, most 270's are made to shoot the lighter rounds, if you want heavier loads, they do make them, but I would just about guess that if you go over the 150 gr. you will be prone to get a key hole on your target and that would come frome too slow of twist. You have to have more twist/ft to stabalize the bullet. The 243 is a prime example, few will shoot the heavy rounds.

Next season may be different, but I'm glad to say that has always been my experience with my .270 nail driver. 130gr damages less meat too.

Yea sometimes you can't make sense of it. I've destroyed a deers heart and have them go 100 yards...and just made a decent vitals shot and have them drop like their spine got taken out. I have only hunted with the 270 for 2 years. Before that hunted a 30-06 and the 270 seems to have outperformed the 30-06 with the few deer i've got so far...

off topic, but any suggestions on the best AR caliber (that can be mounted on a standard lower) is best suited for deer hunting out to 300yards? Im thinking 6.8SPC or maybe even the new 300AAC blackout although there is significant drop past 240yrds it still delivers about 1700fps or so with 1350 or so ftlbs. the 6.5 Grendel shows the range but does it have the knockdown?

130gr core-lokts as everyone else has stated. Been shooting them for 7-8yrs and never had a single issue I could blame on the bullet.

I hit him alittle high and just clipped the top of the lung's, but the amount of damage it did when I gutted him was amazing. There was damage all the way down to about the middle of his lungs.

130gr cor loks here too. Never had a problem with them. I killed to does at over 300 yards last year and they both fell within 20 yards. Of course shot placement had alot to do with it too

I shoot a floated barrel Remington 700 in .270. I reload my own ammo. I hunt deer with a 130 grain Sierra Game King bullet loaded for 2900 fps. I use 51.6 grains of IMR 4350 powder. CCI 200 primers. After I get the bullet seated, I normally take some fine sand paper and smooth out the lead tip. Bulk lead tip bullets tend to get misshapen in the box.

The two deer I shot this year were at 100 yards and 265 yards. The 100 yard shot was through the deer's open mouth and severing the brain stem. The deer dropped in its tracks. To make a shot like that, you need to whistle at the deer, wait for it to turn and bleat at you. Then take the shot.

The heart shot at 265 resulted in a heavy blood trail and the deer ran about 15 yards into the tree line.
