Discipline or too extreme??

What the hell, I'll be the voice of dissention. Won't be the first or last time....

He did not walk it ONE time. "Mayes made his son walk from Kings Highway to his home in The Fairways once on Friday, twice on Saturday and again on Sunday. Each time Mayes required his son to carry a concrete block used for landscaping that law enforcement officials say weighed about 25 pounds."

I think most of us are familiar with the type of block used. I'd love to see half of you carry that block in your hands, one HALF mile. Much less 6 times that, without water, at this time of year.

I applaud the father's involvement in his son's life and his ATTEMPT at disciplining him. I deplore his lack of imagination to use his (apparently) hated military discipline on his 4'2" 135# son. Maybe the boy will learn whatever lesson the father hoped to impart. Or maybe, he'll just learn he's a sphincter with unresolved issues.

But I'm like the rest of you, I only have part of the story. He could deserve father of the year, or he could deserve to run a full marathon, today, in full BDU's, carrying that block in his hand.

Wait, what? Can you speak up? I can't hear you over all the chest pounding in here.

This is what is wrong in this country. So many minorities suffer because of the lack of a father figure in the home thanks to Democratic policies (thanks LBJ) and we punish one who stuck around for finding a non violent punishment for his child.

Agreed. I had used to have to dig big holes and fill them in. Sure beat having my back porch painted

paywall.............but...

walking 3 miles in 2 hours is a very slow almost non-walk.......and 25#'s isn't that heavy.....

This. When I was in high school (graduated in 06 - no old timer here!) we didn't get water breaks during wrestling practice. We also kept the heater in the room on full blast. It was like 85-90 degrees in there. I would, no joke, sweat off 4-5 lbs each practice.

Guess what? Nobody ever died or had to go to the hospital. If we all could do that then some punk 16 year old can walk three frickin miles without a water break. Bunch of sissies in the world today.

How long could it POSSIBLY take to walk 3 miles with what basically amounts to a heavy bookbag (25 lbs -- really?!?!) Excuse me for not feeling bad that the kid didn't get a water break for, at most, 45 minutes. Millions of 16 year olds across America do the same thing every day at their sports pratice

Well, we can be damned sure that whatever problems the kid was having will not get fixed now. This is BS. I applaud that father for trying to save his son. As for the kid not having any water and being unsafe, note that the article says that when LE saw the kid a second time and in the middle of the night, the father was WITH the kid.

Because of interference with this father, that kid may very well be screwed for life, rather than learning discipline and becoming a good human being. This is another example of the *****fication of America

Yep.

I'm not in very good shape but I bet I could do it pretty easily, even in 100 degree heat. You are WALKING for crying out loud. If you wanted to bet a lot of money, I would do it twice in a row with no water breaks. Again, we are talking about WALKING. It's literally one of the first basic movement skills a human learns after crawling.

Well we can both just assume what you (or I) are capable of. Are you 4'2" and 135#? If not, please carry 20% of your body weight in concrete in your hands for 5 minutes.
I ran a 5k Saturday morning. I would not want to cover that ground hand carrying a landscaping block, especially in this heat, with no water, FOUR times over the course of the weekend for any reason, much less to 'learn a lesson' from my daddy.
The kid was watching "too many youtube videos". How about take away the blasted computer/tablet/cell phone and put his rump to work in the yard for not listening? Being a PARENT is not being a friend but it's also not being a drill sargeant.

19% of my body weight is still less than 35 lbs, which is what I would guess my three and a half year old son weighs. I'm not saying it would be easy, because it would likely be quite the work out. However, it wouldn't be anything close to dying or even going to the hospital.

See my post at #44. 16 year olds do way harder stuff than this every day for sports. I don't consider the "no water breaks" part even relevant considering it would take, at most, 45 minutes and I would be shocked if most sports practices had water breaks much more frequently than every 30-45 minutes.
