Pierce County

Sheriff Ramsey Bennett says the cost, just in Pierce County, will be “many thousands of dollars.”

The county will also be forced to add at least two new law enforcement officers for building security on a continuing, daily basis.

He will recommend the county have two manned security checkpoints, one at the county courthouse on U.S. Highway 84 and one at the county courthouse annex on Nichols Street.

“The law requires that be done and it says it is the duty of the sheriff to ensure it is done,” he says.

The cost of implementing the new security measures will be at least $70,000-$100,000 initially, with ongoing costs as the new security provisions will be permanent.

“It will take about $70,000 to cover (one year of) the salaries for the two new officers,” says Bennett.

The sheriff points out that there may be other expenses related to building modifications.

“I am an advocate of gun rights. I want to be clear about that. I believe any decent law abiding citizen has a right to keep and bear arms,” he says. “However, ....

“The cost to our county is just one example,” he says.

Another example, he notes, is the fact that guns and conflict don’t mix.

“Generally, when you are in a government building, you might already be angry about having to pay your taxes, or that you’ve had to come to court because you’ve been charged with a crime, or you are getting a divorce, or you are in a dispute,” the sheriff says. “Those circumstances would not be good times for you to be carrying a gun.”

The county commission has the guns and security issue and Bennett’s presentation on its agenda for Tuesday night.

So on July 1st the no firearms signs in post offices will be removed and we can carry in there? I'm surprised there hasn't been an uproar about people potentially going postal from the anti gun people.

Weapons carry permit holders will be able to bring their guns to Snellville’s city council meetings starting July 1 after city council members decide not to try and prevent those who can legally carry from doing so at meetings.

Albany City Commissioners are on the fence about passing a gun ordinance following the recently signed House Bill 60 which would allow city employees to come to work with a gun.

On Tuesday city commissioners went back and fourth on whether or not to pass the ordinance, ultimately coming to 3-3 vote.

Because Ward three city commissioner was not there to break the tying vote, commissioners will re-vote next week.

Today, Dougherty County Commissioners discussed a proposed resolution in response to the bill.

"Make resolutions to prohibit their employees from bringing weapons to the job," said Crowdis.

f the resolution is passed by commissioners, all Dougherty County employees working in a government building, can't bring their handgun or other weapons inside. The only exception is law enforcement officials.

Commissioners and the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office are working on providing extra security measures for the government center and Central Square to comply with the new state law.

"The access to the building has to be limited and security measure has to be in place," said Col. Mark Shirley, Dougherty. Sheriff's Office.

The proposed resolution doesn't only include bringing guns in the workplace.

"Also in county vehicles. If they are working in county vehicles they can't have a weapon in a county vehicle," said Crowdis.

County officials say they are in favor of the proposed resolution.
