Elmer Keith: 1899-1984

Great post! I loved reading his articles in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and I have read a few of his books. I miss all the old gun writers. If you want a really good fiction read that includes many of the old gun writers (Charles Askins, Ed McGivern, Jack O’Conner, and a few others, pick up Stephen Hunters’s book “Pale Horse Coming” - one of the best Earl Swagger books he wrote.

He was as genuine and trustworthy as they come. His articles were based on his true life experiences and have been a true inspiration to me. I liked the story about his hunting encounter near the Mexican border with the Game Warden who carried 2 badges. The story about the Idaho Game Warden who knocked on his door to arrest his son for steelhead / salmon poaching was another good one. I believe these stories are in the “Hell I Was There” book.
