Fatwood harvest

So best to find it near lower stump area of tree, or any knot area?

I've had my best luck wth dead standing near limbs or at the core but with that said a dead rotten log laying on the ground is good too. Just knock off the rotten exterior and look around the limbs and core. Like someone else said I found a log that was just the core and the whole thing was Fatwood
 
We always called it lighter pine and I grew up in GA. Dad was from VA, so maybe that is where we got the term from. I do know that if you shoot it with a 45, it smells like turpentine.:becky:
