Favorite BBQ joint

J. R. 's Steakhouse and Butchershop, Phenix City, Alabama. (Huge burgers and side portions for around $7, plus great BBQ).

Mike and Eds, Columbus, Georgia. (Great BBQ and ribs, I'm friends with the owner's wife's father.).

Burt's Butchershop and Eatery, Columbus, Georgia. (Wednesday special, Steak and 2 large portion sides for around $8, great BBQ).

Little Building off of Exit 25 on I-185, Debatable which city it is in. (Best steaks so I've heard, always packed for dinner. Only open for dinner. A little pricey but worth it).

Hog Heaven, LaGrange, Georgia. (Awesome BBQ and huge portions. I recommend the Hungry Man's special. 2 huge portions of BBQ meat and a side or two, $10).

Shane's Rib Shack, Newnan, Georgia. (Great BBQ and ribs).

Jekyll and Hydes Sports Bar, Newnan, Georgia. (Great BBQ and ribs).

Wallace BBQ, Austell, Ga. Great food, great people, great atmosphere.

Their pulled pork is awesome but the stew is horrible.

I live close to Sprayberrys, but their prices are just too doggone high. Billy Bob's BBQ in Carrollton is my favorite, great food at good prices. You can go thru the drive-thru and order a regular or large family-pack, and have every thing you need. Closest thing to Melear's in Union City I've found. They even have a hot sauce you can ask for that's like the old Melears.
Best deal on stew is to go to Walker's Meats in Carrollton. Buy it by the gallon for less than $20. Pour it up in quarts and freeze it. Good stuff.

Where is Billy Bob's in C-ton? If it is anywhere close to what Melear's was like then I'll cry tears of sweet BBQ joy.

Well, we tried Wallace's in Austell tonight after seeing it mentioned by several folks in this thread. Glad we went. Good pork, good sweet tea. Nice vinegar sauce, and the stew wasn't bad.

Oh, this thread gets my juices flowing! I LOVE BBQ! Here are some of my GA favorites....

  • Williamson Bros for pulled pork. Their ribs are inconsistent from excellent on a good day to dried out and overcooked on another.
  • Fox Bros is a great all around place. I'm not a big brisket eater but really do it right.
  • Southern Soul on St Simons blew me away. I was expecting tourist-que the first time but it is an awesome place to eat.
  • Cornerstone BBQ in Flintstone - its a small, out of the way, hole in the wall kinda place, the sides are nothing special, but the barbeque is worth the drive. Exceptional pulled pork with tons of flavor and bark, the ribs are unreal!
  • Baileys in Ringgold - Their hot bbq sauce is the best in the business. I regularly take a couple of bottles home. The pork is consistently very good, moist and lots of bark. They only serve ribs on Wed and Fri, and the ribs are a little different and on the smallish side but still very good. What makes them different is they smoke them, cut them, sauce them and the smoke them some more to caramelize the sauce.
  • Fat Matts Rib Shack on ATL- The pulled pork is fine but the ribs are absolutely divine! I love the way they char the sauce on those big tender ribs!
  • Edmunds in Augusta - funny how when they moved from their hole in the wall to a new place in the 90's their quality fell off. But it is worth a mention. Only place I ever had hash over rice so I don't know how well they do it compared to others who serve it but it is some killer stuff.
  • Harolds in ATL - no list would be complete without this great institution. A little sketchy at night tho!

And now the I'd rather just eat the hickory as the que list...
  • Pappy Reds - seriously? How does this place stay in business?
  • Sonny's - I'll eat there is someone else is buying. Truthfully not that bad but not real que imo.
  • I love Oscar Poole, he's a great, colorful guy. But his BBQ leaves a lot to be desired.
  • Slopes - I have only been twice...I was right the first time and shouldn't have given them a second chance.
  • Pig-N-Chick in ATL - was recommended to me by a guy I know - and I thought we were friends...terrible! Think soot flavored jerky. I think there is a Pig-N-Chik (no c before the K) too, maybe I went to the wrong place?

anns.jpgWe started with BBQ and went to burgers within this post. If you want a huge burger (call it a heart attack on a bun) that is great in flavor you have to go to Ann's Snack Bar. Little old Black Lady who is as fiesty as they get! Homemade burgers made while you wait. 8 stools and 8 rules! Reminds me of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. You can get kool-aid to drink, in which she calls juice and does not like you calling it kool-aid, which will make your fillings in your teeth hurt. Live in or near Atlanta and not afraid of the element I suggest giving it a try. I highly recommend the ghetto burger!
