We’re considering replacing the carpet in our den with something else. With 2 dogs an a kid it stays too dirty and get puked on too much. The kitchen floor is hardwood. Not sure I want to do hardwood in the den, but will if it’s the only option that is affordable and looks decent.

Anyone have any bright ideas what I can replace the carpet with?

Given the adjacent wood floor (assuming you don't want to rip that up for this project), the only choice that will look decent will be either traditional tile or some type of laminate tile. Laminates have come a long way and nice laminate tile looks great. But it's fairly expensive.

It may actually be cheaper, depending on the size of the kitchen, to tear out that hardwood as well as the carpet, and go with an engineered hardwood product for both rooms, so it's continous (best look). The finish on a lot of engineered floors is so hard, dogs can't do much damage. Darker colors also help hide what little scratching does happen. Ditto for scraped/distressed style hardwoods.

In our previous house, a dishwasher flood destroyed the original, oak hardwood floor; that floor had a lot of wear from our dogs. We replaced it with an engineered wood product, and it held up great for a decade, to the point where we sold the house. We were so pleased with it, we went with engineered hardwood for our new house. Four years in, no regrets. Still looks excellent, despite the dog traffic.
