Do you put sugar in grits, spaghetti, or rice?

Before military school I hadn't been exposed to a great deal of "those people" (as Marse Robert called them).

Imagine my horror when I saw Yankees pouring cream and sugar on their grits......I wouldn't have been more disgusted if they pulled out a BBQ puppy and started gnawing on it.

My ancestors are from Sicily. A heaping teaspoon of sugar goes in to the sauce to counter any acidity from the tomatoes. Never heard of it being used in grits or rice.

Try a little butter and sugar in your grits. My mother used to make white rice with a little butter and sugar on top of them for breakfast. And yep. a little sugar in spaghetti to counter the acidic content (less indigestion that way) but, don't put too much.
