closest thing to cream of wheat is wallpaper paste -for real -- Google it.

Good analogy, the wallpaper paste might taste better though...with sugar.

I also don’t think corn bread should taste like cake but it’s not a northern vs southern thing. Same with hush puppies. Varies by area even within the South.

I have put a little sugar in spaghetti sauce. Seems to help sometimes. Rice pudding - whoever doesn't like that should have his citizenship revoked.
But in grits... hell no!!! If ya do that, they are no longer grits.

Salt can sweeten scorched coffee, sugar can help scorched spaghetti sauce. The only thing that God intended to go on a sausage biscuit is yellow mustard.
