Is this the same guy who said that Fireclean was canola oil?

No idea, as there were numerous industry folks that tested and confirmed FireClean as canola oil, all around the same time.

Nothing wrong with using canola oil as a base for a gun lube. If it works, who cares where it came from?
 
All these 'safe to eat' lubricants are some kind of vegetable oil. In almost every case they are re-purposed from the food-service industry. I'd always heard that FrogLube was derived from a food-safe lube used in industrial mixing machines.

As mentioned in the article, it would certainly explain why FL tends to gum-up a bit when cold.
 
Isn't there an article that compares lubes under a spectrometer or something. One well known lube was roller coaster lube that was safe if it fell onto people or into water.
Someone refresh my memory.
