Fruits of fall

I’m firmly in the not crabapple camp. Could be a Royal Limbertwig, They were a pretty popular Apple during that period, especially for farms.

I'm not familiar with the history but the closest thing I have ever seen to the apple from this tree are the ones from a whitney crabapple.
