Good cheap bear gun for Grizzly country

338 Federal will get. It done. 599.00
This is the perfect option. Add a reasonable scope or some fancy sights and release the 338 Fed. Cracken!

You don’t want anything with magnification scope if you’re not experienced, it’s very difficult to hit a bear charging if it’s close , you just simply cannot aimed fast enough. Get a 18.5 12g that’s why it’s the favorite gun in Alaska for grizzly

I figured that and was the reason I recommended a pair of fancy sights. I prefer sights as well in heavy brush and when shooting at a moving target.

I agree. To bad 45/70 lever guns are so high. I am telling you the Savage 300 Win Mag is the way to go. Maybe a 450 Bushmaster would be a contender. With like an 18-20 inch barrel for maneuverability. I think they are putting them into some bolt rifles now.
300 win mag would be ok...12 gauge might be better, the OP was looking for a handgun as well. I think that 338 would be better or a 375 H&H, but your not gonna find one at Savage prices more than likely. My personal combo is a 44 mag that stays on me, and a 12 gauge with appropriate slugs nearby in camp or on the ATV etc. 44 in a chest holster works even when casting a fly rod.

That's a good price on a 338. Put a good set of scout sights and you have a winner and a accurate one at that. That would be my first pick and a 10mm ( the one I own ) just because I now it reliably shoots every time. A 338 ain't no slouch. They called that a super round at River Bend Gun Club and won't even let you shoot that on that range. I think that says a lot. Plus buying a new rifle is going to instill some comfort of carrying a gun that hasn't worn out.

I figure the 12 guage is a great option as well. The only reason I would pick a rifle over a 12 slugger would the off chance something else is in season and a possibility of walking up on whatever it is. Plus it would make a fine moose gun during season. Stuff is so high there you almost have to be financially independent just to live there and everything up there is priced through the roof.

I think the gov actually gives you money just to live there if I read that right. How is that for. Welcome Matt. Come live in Alaska we will pay you to live here. Reversed Taxation with representation. Wonderful concept! Brilliant!
