I shared that opine until I killed one while fishing Cooper Creek last year. He was 4' long and was not afraid of me. I splashed the water in front of him.. I killed him against the rocks with my net handle which was too D%##short. I came close to learning to walk on water. Waddaya gonna do if you think it's you or him?

YIKES!!!!

I will mention that Common Snapping Turtles are not protected in GA, but Alligator Snappers are highly protected. All nonvenomous snakes are also protected. Venomous snakes are not (but a large percentage of bites come from people trying to kill them, best to just leave them alone). There are conservation groups that will trap and relocate nuisance snapping turtles. I trapped my big display snapper at a private pond in Roswell.

Back to the original topic, I keep a Bond Arms .357 derringer in my back pocket. It will shoot CCI rat shot, and you don't have to worry about it not cycling the light load like you would with a semi-auto. It is reliable and indestructible, but the trigger on a derringer sucks and it is not accurate much beyond 10 ft. when loaded with .357 mag loads.

For the record, I have walked miles and miles in the woods hiking, hunting, and fishing. I've never felt the need to shoot a snake. I've relocated several, including venomous ones, from roads, trails, and yards. I've had much more trouble from dogs than from any type of wild life.
