Just got a Great Dane pup. Good looking 7 week old. Does anyone have any experience with them and have any breed specific advice? I know they are part of the mastiff family, and I have a lot of familiarity with mastiffs.

When they get big, they seem to enjoy having kids ride them. It's cute and fun...but will quickly cause your dog to limp and need surgery.. They are not ponies. If you need an animal for your kids to ride, think horse or pony, not dog. Congrats...best house dog I ever had was a great dane.

Talk to a qualified veterinarian about proper nutrition. Danes have a tendency to need well balanced amounts and quality of food to control growth while at the same time not unduly hindering it. You have to find the right balance for your particular dog. This is much more of an issue than with smaller dogs. At the very least, mix in good quantities of low fat cottage cheese or yogurt to make sure he gets enough calcium for bone growth.

Also, watch out for damage to that long whip of a tail. I have known many Danes that have broken their tails by hitting them on corners while wagging them. A couple of them did it so chronically they had to have the tail amputated.

Great pets but short life span which is tough. Had a Blue as a kid. And yes - like Marmaduke - they wil find their favorite corner on the couch. Watch the hips and "no kid riding". Nutrition as mentioned is key.
Obedience /walking class and you have an amazing new family member.

Lastly - post a search for a bobcat for the yard clean up!!
