Great Dane advice?

They are awesome dogs for sure. Gentle giants in their own right. I had an Ole English Mastiff who thought that he was a lap dog. He had joint pain and he would get so stiff that he could barely move. My Vet recommended that I change his diet to a food with less protein and that I add glucosamine to his food. When I did that he became more active and playful and was in no more pain. Nutrition is a huge part of keeping them healthy. At 2 years old he was 175lbs. Also my Vet told me to limit his jumping down from high places (trucks, porches etc) for the first two years as it could cause more problems later.
Enjoy your new pup sir!

I've had 7 in about 40 years, like having 2 dogs, usually lay around inside and play outside ,bigger they are the shorter the lifespan,90# made it 11 years ,last two had bone cancer in same leg,Lilly was 170#,but the cancer got her at 5&1/2,had her stomach tacked when she was spayed while she was open, still wasn't cheap, but the one before her got bloat in the middle of the night, was about 3 grand when it was over, then she got bone cancer, wouldn't want another kind of dog anyway, never had a hurt tail, but got hit in the jewels many times and the coffee table wiped out,my 170# Lilly has had her picture taken so many times I couldn't begin to count, people would stop us while walking to have their picture taken with her, miss her dearly, I could go on all day but I won't, I'll have another one someday, enjoy your puppy!

Had 4 over a 22 year span, as you can see that's not a very good average...best dogs ever, just don't live long, feeding puppy food can cause growth spurts that will cause joint problems later on give him good adult dog food from the start...you wont find a better breed though, love their personality...good luck hes a looker for sure.

Thanks. We took him off the standard puppy food he was on and put him on a slow growth large breed variety right away. He actually preferred the taste too, so bonus!

My friend had one that had his own chair in the living room. I mean a big ass chair. Once they figured out to move everything at tail level he was the best house dog you could ask for.
