Guy brandished his gun at Me and my dog today.

"get my f’n dog off his grass". The issue might have been your dog on his grass. especially when you had your dog on a leash to control him. My neighbor warned his neighbor twice to keep his dog from "****ting" on his grass. The neighbor ignored the request. The dog paid the price on the third day. Some people manicure their yard every three days like my neighbor did. He took pride in his yard. HIS yard. I have a dog. I ensure he doesn't do his business in people's lawns. Some people get real anal about THEIR property.
We walked at a brisk pace, past his small yard, my dog was one foot off the sidewalk. No stopping. No excuse. I have been cleaning up after my dogs for many decades. That was not the issue. He was very lucky.

Make nice with his across the street neighbors and see it their doorbell camera picked it up.
I made certain that the neighbors knew he threatened me with a gun when my dog walked across his yard 2 feet off the sidewalk. Im gonna let it go. But my dog walking primary is not an LCP anymore. Its a G19.

Kill him and your dog wont have his Daddy around
Cops who investigated said it would have been a legal shoot. He made a threat he had the means to carry out. Now i avoid his street. If he confronts me again he is 100% the aggressor. But the cops explained to him that he almost got legally killed. He swore he wont bothet me again.

Assuming the events described by the OP are complete and accurate ( not saying they arent, but none of US know for sure), then i think the OP over-reacted, and could've easily and unnecessarily escalated the situation, ( by saying F.U., spitting in the guy's direction, etc.)
Sure, the homeowner ( as described) was obviously unhinged, dangerous, and guilty of a couple felonies, but in that situation, whether or not either of us were armed, I would've just said something like,"Sorry, man, no offense intended", and started mosying along, rather than digging in and adding fuel to the fire, and perpetuating the whole bitch-fest. ( the OP seemed more than ready to go from zero-to-suburban-gun-battle, when he could've just held his tongue and walked away.)
As alluded to above, no matter the provocation, I desperately would try to avoid any live-fire incidents, and the ensuing legal grief.

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men” Romans 12:18

Good advice for everyone.
