Can my MAPP torch get my steel hot enough before a quench without getting some bricks?

I'd assume you would use the color/temperature scale to determine if you've reached the appropriate temp, but I don't know for sure. Paging Sharpblades.
1. No experience trying to temper steel outside of a machine shop.
2. I think most forges run on propane cylinders anyway, so MAPP should be plenty hot.
3. I also think the big problem with using a hand torch and a MAPP bottle is getting it to heat up evenly.
What alloy are you thinking about hardening?
I got a forge... wait I have 2 I think.
I'd have to look at what type of steel it is.
What configuration is it? small square, round, short, long, etc? Temp sticks will help monitor the temperature in the process. I personally would not attempt an object with any length to it due to warping.
