Mildew is growing in the drinking water line. Replacing it seems like a pain in the ass. Is there a way to clean or flush it out?

If your on City water then I doubt it would be the water line itself. The city uses clorine in the water to prohibit mold and bacteria growth. If the fridge has a filter, it will remove the chlorine. Once the water get to the reservior in the fridge that holds water for drinking, that water is unprotected. That doesn't usualy happen unless the drinking water filler goes unused for long periords of time.

You might not want to know about all the rest of the pipe in your fresh water supply, from water tower to faucet.

Change it to copper or braided stainless. Less light makes for less growth.
Every braided stainless connection pipe I've seen is just some sort of composite material like poly-something, rubber, etc. covered with an outer sheath of braided stainless for protection...
