How educated are you?

I have a BA and a Masters in Public Administration. Currently working on a PhD at UGA - mostly because of some of the reasons the others have mentioned, curiosity, kids were grown and I had the time, test my abilities against some pretty sharp minds, greater responsibilities, hopefully improve the salary trajectory of my remaining years in the work force - finally decided what I wanted to be when I grow up...I felt like I was intellectually rejuvenated once I got into the doctoral program at UGA. It's a great feeling after the monotony of the usual grind to make ends meet and raise kids. Though I'm old enough to have fathered just about everyone else in the program, and before you ask, no, i didn't, the youngsters appreciate the perspective brought by someone who's been there and actually had to deal on the ground with things they are learning as theory. Like many of you, I can't stress enough the value of real world experience. One of the programs within the University System that I really like and believe has value is our new focus on awarding students credit for college level learning they learned outside of a classroom. The program is aimed at students who are veterans with military training and other adult students primarily. There is a rigorous evaluation process but it can significantly shorten time to a degree if the student's experience fits well with the core classes everyone takes and sometimes even in the more advanced classes of the major. PM me if you're interested in talking with someone at a local college or university. I'm happy to find the name and number of the person at the participating public institution closest to you.

I have an MBA from UGA. Honestly, these days it's pretty much useless as MBAs are now a dime a dozen. I learned a helluva lot more once I finished up school, got out in the real world and had to pay taxes.

Looking back now, after I finished high school, I wish I would have joined the military and learned a trade skill and gained other benefits of being in the military. I absolutely hate having a desk job (the only bonus is that I do get to travel and sometimes go to job sites). I've always wanted to learn how to weld and do something interesting like build bikes or motorcycle frames...dumb, I know.

IMHO, unless you have a specialized degree, they're all pretty much the same and in this economy, really don't mean squat.

Dropped out of HS roughly 20 yrs ago at the age of 17. Worked numerous jobs in metal working (fabricator, welder, aircraft structure mechanic, machinist) until a few years ago when manufacturing took a major hit and I got laid off. Decided I was tired of lying on job applications and sweating the background checks, so I got my GED in Spring '09, enrolled in college in Fall '09 and just graduated in December '11 with an AAS in Criminal Justice.

I'm working on my physical fitness level so I can land a job in LE, which is what I wanted to do 15 years ago but couldn't (or wasn't willing to) take the pay cut.

Once I land the job and complete the academy, I want to earn at least one more degree....but I want someone else to pick up the tab for the next one. ;)

I see that Jacksonville State offers a BS in Emergency Management with a minor in Homeland Security that sounds interesting.
