Since the boating accident, I only have .177.

The generic term 'caliber' (lowercase for de emphasis); meant cartridges, caliber, calibre, gauge, mike mike, or pew pew bullet size.

These 'simplified' terms are commonly used in ODT threads to appeal to both the casual gun fancier and the ballistic intellectual equally.

Nah, there's a reason I (just a regular southern guy not a fancier or intellectual) consolidated "calibers" not "cartridges" after the last Ammo/Component shortage, because their is a big difference between them and what they do. Just to cover basics a lot of folks would be shocked how many different cartridges a fella can support with a good supply of Varget and some medium weight .223 and .308 bullets. It sure makes things easier around the shop as well LOL
Just those 2 "caliberrs" when loaded into the appropriate "cartridge", have everything from mice to moose, at most any distance you can see them, covered.

Nope. .22lr 5.56 and .22 mag are the same caliber. 9mm, .38, and .357 are the same caliber. 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r are the same caliber.

I think a lot of folks don't know the difference between caliber and cartridges/chamberings.

You got me down to 5 Calibers,Hmm i Need to diversified,So now i need to get .40 which will be the same as 10mm.
Then again I'm just gonna get some of that Tactical Wasp Spray.

If I didn't already own any guns, and I wanted to build a collection that would cover the most utility with the smallest number of different cartridges, I'd go with 5:

.22 LR
.223
.308
9 mm
12 ga

I could have several .22's. Rifles and pistols. Some scoped, some not. Plinkers and target guns, and hunting guns.

I'd have an accurate .223 varmint rifle with a good scope and a 20" barrel, but also an AR carbine for home defense.

The .308 would feed up to three guns: A pump action or lever action deer rifle, and a battle rifle, and a scoped long-range precision rifle good for targets at 1000 yards (or hunting out to 500).

I'd have two 9mm pistols. A compact concealed-carry weapon, and a bigger gun for the range and for open carry.

The 12 gauge shotguns would come in two or more variations. A rifled-barrel slug gun (18.5" barrel) shooting sabot slug ammo and wearing a low power scope or red dot sight could be my "brush gun" that fills the same role as other guy's lever-action .444 Marlins and .45-70s. That same slug gun, loaded with buckshot and minus the scope, could be a home defense gun too. Load An over/under in 12 ga. would serve me at the trap and skeet club, and for some hunting.

I consolidated a lot a couple of years ago. Found myself craving simplicity, I'm down to 6.

22LR and 12g of course, practice and HD. Feel these are the two absolutely everyone should own.

45, 223, 30-06. These can be swapped for countless others but the idea is you need your handgun, intermediate/battle round, and big game/long range round.

Have 38 Special too but would like to eliminate it for another 45 but the platform is my holdup.
