I don't usually post these, but this one is bad...let's hear the justification

There are those of us out here that still do our jobs while risking our asses to protect the Constitution. I took the oath of office and swore to protect people's life and liberty. A cop is not worth his salt if he fails to protect the rights of the populace, even if that means allowing a bad one to get away. I'd rather be put in the ground than to trample on the idea of liberty and our way of life.

There is still such a thing as honor and integrity. With that said, I refuse to back down from a fight in the line of duty. I don't agree with that this cop did in the story but I wasn't there and would prefer to hold judgment until I see all sides of the story. As for backing each other up - I'll back up any officer, anywhere and at anytime. We will sort out the details later and by sorting out, I don't mean creating a story or writing each other's reports.

I've seen things I don't personally agree with and its been discussed in depth. I've made bad calls before as anyone would but my good calls outnumber the wrong ones. You learn and grow and go on. I take pride in the fact that I treat people like I would like to be treated. Someone is treated with dignity and respect until they don't allow me to anymore. When I get treated rough at that time the game changes and I handle business accordingly.

I see a lot of cop bashing out here, both on this forum and in my town as a whole. It does bother me but I understand. Its your right. My challenge to you is that if you don't like the way your community handles policing, get involved, and go to work cleaning up the profession and the streets at the same time. So before you turn your back on the profession as a whole, remember there are those of us out here that prefer to walk the streets at night all the while knowing we may not make it home, and thats ok too if it preserves our American way of life. Just my .02...... Carry on.

Do the LEOs here at least understand WHY some people are so concerned about cops? Surely you realize that there is some legitimate concern, even among the decent citizens, right? There may only be a fine line between that legitimate concern and out and out bashing, but there is a line.

Right now my concern is mourning the loss of another officer that I knew growing up in Jonesboro. Too many times have I had to put a black band on my badge. Yes there are bad cops....but sh**ty teachers, bad doctors, and perverted priests. Every profession has one that ruins it for us all.

A ****ty teacher can't kill you and get away with it. A ****ty doctor can, and I hear a lot of concern about doctors as well. Perverted priests are bad, as well, and I think they've gotten their fair amount of attention.

But this isn't about teachers, doctors, or priests. It's about cops. Do you recognize that people can have legitimate concern about cops without crossing the line into "cop bashing"?

I think it falls into 2 simple categories.

1. innocent until proven guilty

2. guilty until proven innocent

I ALMOST ALWAYS CHOOSE #1, 99% of the time................

We are at a hightened state of communication such as twitter, facebook..etc. When a cop from California does something stupid, we all here about it. We rarely hear the stories that have a good ending. Also, there has never been a greater threat to our profession than there is now. Clandestine groups are at their highest levels and are armed to the teeth. So when there is a cop on edge, I can understand their reasoning.

My issue with some people's concerns are that the stories passed around and sent from person to person which causes them to be distorted. The lack of personal accountability in our society is stifling and sickening. If you were to go to any prison in Georgia, nearly every prisoner would say that they didn't commit the crime they were there for and that their sentence was a bad product of the state.

Well, it is a difficult job. But if you want to argue that we shouldn't be so concerned because the vast majority of cops are good, then I would argue that cops should relax, as well, because the vast majority of citizens are not out to get them, either.

That cuts both ways. It seems very often that when cops misbehave, they are not held accountable, either. Like this guy with three prior incidents for which he was disciplined (and who knows how many for which he wasn't). He will likely end up getting away with what is essentially murder.

Where i'm from, I'd lose my job for just one of his complaints he had received. And as for relaxing, thats not a very smart thing to do on duty. See, I go from call to call, not from happy citizen to happy citizen, but from a drunkened fight to a shooting call onto some other wild type of call. How am I supposed to relax again? Like I said in my first post, someone gets treated with respect until I'm not allowed to anymore. The person dictates how my encounter with them will go. Thats how a citizen has the upper hand. We are reactive in nature. I understand that its a part of the job, which is fine too.

Citizens should always remained concerned about their government, which includes the police department or sheriffs department for their area. Its part of living in a society like ours. I stay informed on the police department where I live, even though I don't work there. Its the only way to ensure there accountability. If there is an issue with the department that isn't worked out with the department head, go to their civilian bosses, such as the city council or the county administrator/commissioner. There's more than one way to skin a cat (or a pig) you just have to know how your level of government works. For those of us out here that obey the law as we enforce it, we don't worry about complaints and people's perception. We have a job to do and I for one, have one very smoking hot wife to go home to.
