One thing I agree with is wearing safety glasses. My local FFL gives them out for free with every gun purchase. They are the cheap, clear, and disposable type. They make a world of difference not only just for safety but if you are a contacts wearer, blowback gas from your firearm won't dry out your contacts. Shooting is dangerous in general. Glad it didn't do any worse. When you mentally recover, I think you should step a few yard back and shoot. I only shoot steel at long distances so I don't really ever worry about it but if I were shooting steel up close I would go at least 15 yards back and the steel would have to be at an angle.
