I'm going to be 57 this year. I have a 16 year old daughter who's planning to go to college and she has the grades to pull some good scholarships. I don't know if they're good enough to get a full ride anywhere so I have to assume I will pay for a significant amount of tuition and expenses.
I'm also a Type2 diabetic. So I wanted to know if I had a shot at seeing my girl graduate from college.
I have a general practitioner. I won't say who he is because this isn't Yelp. I haven't really been happy with him but he's close by and around my age. Usually when I see him it's a 10 minute conversation, he renews my prescription and sees me to the door. I don't get a lot of input from him without asking for it and when I do its really not that great. I had to ask him to put me on Jardiance. He knew about the medication but never brought it up and he was reluctant to give it to me. But I was tired of having A1C numbers that were too high and I couldn't lose weight no matter what I was doing.
I got on the Jardiance. I lost a good 10 pounds of weight the first month and my A1C went from a 9 to a 7.1.

So I went and found an Internist. I gave him the laundry list.
1. Too tired to pursue hobbies or chores when I get home from work.
2. I've got a daughter who will need someone to drive her to college.
3. I have a sneaking suspicion that I medically I could be doing more for my situation.

He gave me a battery of tests to resolve the cause for Item #1.
The levels of thyroid, testosterone and a couple of other chemicals/ hormones are fine he says. He declared that I'm suffering from "Work Fatigue". I can't wait to spring that on The Boss. :)

The Internist also scheduled me for a Calcium Screening. They give you a CAT Scan that shows them the plaque build up in your heart and the connecting arteries. When you hear Belinda talking about Virtual Imaging, this is what she's really talking about. I went to a clinic in Braselton, not Virtual Imaging.

I'm glad I did. I'm not in any immediate danger of having a heart attack but the results of the test showed that I am not exactly healthy either. It was worth the $99 I had to pay for the test. The test results triggered an appointment with a Cardiologist who has put me on some Statins to help out with this and I have to adjust the diet to a low cholesterol menu.

The point of this story is for the guys who are just taking whatever their General Practitioner is giving them. Do what they say, but at the same time you're the one who has to be in charge of this just like everything else in life.

Your daughter should be taking college courses now.

Move On When Ready is Georgia’s new dual enrollment program that allows high school students (9th – 12th grade) to earn college credit while working on their high school diploma.

All fees are paid for by the state.

As to your Dr., find one you are comfortable with, yours sounds like a "bottom half of the class" graduate.

I have had great success with Victoza combined with Metformin. A1c dropped to around 6.0.

When I was first diagnosed I had the same experience with my GP. I had to pretty much self educate other than a pamphlet the nurse gave me. I have long since changed my GP and also see a specialist.

What is your BMI? What and how frequently do you eat? Do you consider medications the only form of control for diabetes? I am not a health care professional and am not selling anything but I Think this website would be worth your time to look at.

Had a dr same way for years plus he was always 2 hours are more late seeing me! Changed doctors about 10 years ago and really made a difference! She spends time with me and asks questions and asks if I have any! She calls me within two days of blood work to tell me my a1c , good and bad cholesterol etc ! Also see a specialist once a year and my family doctor shares my test results with her ! Family doctor makes sure I have eye check up once a year and makes the appointment for me! Diabetes can cause eye problems if not kept in control! I’ve been treated for last 20 years and at 64 I’m still going strong!
