Licenses for Bicycles? Seriously?

Your contention is that public roadways, which are built for MOTOR VEHICLE traffic, should be allowed preferential use by you (which is what happens since other traffic must slow down based on the way you admit you ride) for your chosen RECRETATIONAL activity on a surface which was not designed nor built for that use? You also belive the fact you own vehicles and pay taxes allowing you to operate those vehicles on the roadways somehow translates to your bicycle recreation? Seriously? Wow....
While I get your riding towards the center on blind curves from a logic standpoint, your inability to acknowledge the roads are NOT built or designed for bicylists and your refusal to want to pay your way to accomodate your personal chosen recreation falls completely flat. There are infinitely more NON-bicyclists than bicyclists yet you want everyone to subsidize your fun?
This of course is the common "It's all about me" society when seem to have devolved in. Cities are a feces hole enough because of that mindset. Now we have to deal with it on rural roadways as well apparently....

yes....we will have to deal with it....I deal with it 3-4 times a week by being as courteous to passing motorist as possible....

How do you deal with the cyclist you pass......you should try it sometime...

I'll even take you for a ride at your pace....and let YOU see what we contend with...it may provide you with some valuable insight based on ACTUAL experience...not just high and mighty opinion which you seem to throw around here in this debate....

As for your argument as to why the roads WERE designed....I tend to focus more on HOW they are used now....

When the GOVERNMENT STARTS SPENDING THE MONEY I ALREADY GIVE THEM WISELY, I WILL CONSIDER GIVING THEM MORE WILLINGLY.....I DON'T WANT ANOTHER NEW TAX FOR ANYTHING.....!!! WE ARE TAXED ENOUGH.

Interstates were built for motor vehicle traffic. Local roads were not.

Taxes pay for roads. 10% of the money used to build and maintain roads comes from user fees or vehicle-based taxation. The other 90% comes from general taxes and bonds. It could be argued that someone that uses their bike for transportation is subsidizing your use of the roads in your truck or car.

Roads are not built just for motor vehicles. Roads used to be for horse and buggy, and the buggy riders used to get pissed when the cars blew past and spooked their horses. But times change.

Roads are built for motor vehicles, bikes, tractors, walkers, joggers, - in other words everyone. Legally I have just as much right to ride my bike on the road as you do your car.

But don't worry you just keep paying more and more taxes to the man. I am sure it will all work out nice for you in the end.

Thanks for the article. An unfortunate and tragic accident caused by negligence of a driver. Not sure it applies to this thread -but I might be missing something.

When I originally posted it we were still discussing the car vs bike safety aspect. This illustrated who wins :)

So the registration system on cars doess't help get vehicles returned to the proper owner or deter theft? You seriously don't get the point of that?

I think we all get the point....look at how much it deters car theft! It won't help with bikes.....bc we ALL know this isnt even a valid argument but rather a weak minded, WEAK reason to try and LAMELY justify ANOTHER TAX.....

Then you shouldn't have a problem paying the same tax on your bike that I pay on my car to ride your bike on the same roads then.

So, if they're licensed and tagged they get to ride on the left side of the road (like a motorcycle) and you can only pass in passing zones. Also takes care of the riding two wide, now they can stagger ride on the road and you'll have an even harder time passing. Yep, that would make it better for you.

No, they are not and no you don't. Ride your bike on I-85 and let me know how that goes.
Road are built for motor vehicles, period. The fact the law, with restrictions, accomodates other restricted uses doesn't change the fact of what they are designed or built for.

Maybe the answer is, tax the person not the vehicle. If I pay to use the roads then I should be able to use them with whatever I own. I cannot use more than one at a time (unless I'm pulling a trailer). I'll gladly pay an umbrella "road use license" that covers me in whatever I choose to operate.
