Liquor Bottles Left by British WWI Troops

The "Cork".
The Cork allows volatiles to escape through the cork, and it might be milder than you think.
Unless the whiskey bottles were stored standing up, they corks would probably have rotted (whiskey, et.al., does bad things to corks). If the wine bottles were stored standing up, the corks may have dried out and the wine went bad.
I just can't imagen them leaving them on purpose.
Unless they weren't supposed to have it!

We must assume that The Brits were trained professionals, and they WOULD have stored the bottles laying on their sides.
I just cannot believe that anyone in the military would posses something they were forbidden to have, and then bury it to hide it.
