I'm having a problem with my 04 Ford F-150 it's strange and the mechanics I've been to can't seem to figure it out. Not every time but occasionally when the symptoms seem to be right. It Lopes when accelerating. The mechanics that I've talked to call it porpoising but it doesn't do it all the time. It seems to be as crazy as this sounds when the outside temperature is over 90 degrees. I've noticed this on my dashboard thermometer. It seems to do it after I idle for an extended. Over probably 5 minutes an example is when I'm sitting idling with AC on waiting for my granddaughter at her bus stop. After I pick her up I make a hard right turn and accelerate up a hill and it drops approximately 500 on the tack but catches right back up. If I let off on it and let it even out and I slowly accelerate it seems to do okay but the next time I put any power to it it'll do it again. When I take it to the mechanics and drop it off the next morning it doesn't do it. They've told me to bring it in when it is doing it and they'll ride with me and figure it out but those times seem to be rather inconvenient. Bike when I've got a load of groceries to take home or I have my grandkids or the shops closed. Has anybody heard of anything like this any information would be helpful I'm just about to try and take it to a Ford dealer but again it seems to not do it when I drop it off. Thanks in advance.

Have you replaced spark plugs? We had an expedition do similar and I thought a transmission problem was occurring. I talked to my Powerstroke mechanic and he said the 5.4 will act like it's "hunting for a gear" when a plug is bad. Sure enough, he replaced the plugs and it ran great afterwards. The original recommended 100,000 mile plug change interval is a joke as well. I think 60,000-75,000 is about right.

It’s either a spark plug or coil pack. Unfortunately you will not know which cylinder it’s missing on till it trips a code. Hope that it’s not number 4 or 8 cause they are under the cab. If you change the plugs make sure the engine is ice cold. The aluminum heads have a tendency for the treads to woller out when changing out plugs.

To change mine without breaking I will run a can of seafoam thru it then drive drive the kids to school come back while it is still warm start the process, the warmer the easier they come out, atleast for me it works well. Never had one break off yet( knock on wood)
