You can also put another layer of the light weight sheetrock over it. Still have to finish the sheetrock, but you don't have to scrape, etc - less mess. Mine turned out real good.

By 1/8" or 1/4" that's not too much to sacrifice.

Watch the video on this page, I've done it this way years ago. Test inside of your closet to make sure that it will come off this easy.
