So Carlos Hathcock used a Winchester model 70 in 30-06. Does anyone doubt for one second a Winchester model 70 in 30-06 is not a "Sniper" rifle?

His rifle was because it was used by him but not every Winchester 70 is.

I would agree... A sniper rifle describes who is holding the rifle, not a characteristic of the carbine itself.

Bump for more hilariousness. So - if a trained military designated marksman were to be in possession of another DM's gun from another unit, wouldn't he have a sniper's sniper rifle?

My definition of a sniper rifle is a rifle a sniper is using. If a sniper is shooting a 10/22 then it's a sniper rifle.

100% true. Hand a $6,000 custom built surgeon with a 3k S&B optic to your average joe and a $150 mosin nagant with a base line circa 40's scope or even irons to a marine scout sniper and see who is the better shot. Guarantee that scout will have more x's.

If a "sniper rifle" existed, i would say a "sniper rifle" would be an assortment of things. The rifle itself which has high rigidity as a whole system, the ammo "tuned" to that rifle, and the operator trained to remove as much of the human factor as possible.
