I would recommend staying away from the universal brands. I had issues with one years ago andpayneed has a thread going now about one he had that has gave him issues.

The USGI M1 carbine is not a cheap acquisition now a days.

I am sort of right there with you....I am Knee deep in 30.06.
I like the .30 carbines.
However, a Ruger mini-14 /Ranch Rifle has a similar look, similar size (if a bit heavier), and shoots a much more potent round that's a better man stopper (and cheaper,too).
This begs the question: why aren't wood stocked Mini 14's more popular?
I think that's because they're not tacti-cool looking . They don't appeal to armchair commandos .
And they're not on television all the time being glorified by Hollywood in military and law-enforcement action movies .
