M1 Garand is the greatest rifle of all time

Shortcomings based on the new standard that was developed by the US Military at the time. They wanted a lighter weapon with less recoil.

My statement about it never being issued was aimed at Chatties argument that the reason the AR is a superior weapon is because it has been in service so long. When I pointed out the shortcomings of the 5.56 round he tried to claim he was not referring to that AR. LOL!

The 5.56 is a superior military cartridge to 7.62 too.

The AK was (and is) so prevalent around the world because of influence peddling by the former Soviet Union and Soviet Bloc countries. They practically gave them away by the thousands in an effort to spread it's influence to every under developed nation on the planet. It paid off for them enormously. Now, I will agree it is a better weapon than the M14 but then that is not in itself saying that much.
Ah man, I was with you right up to the end. LOL!

Because it weighed enough to be controlled during rapid fire.

Semi auto only give me the M14 every day of the week.
Hmm, I'm thinking any weapon heavy enough to control the 7.62x51 round in auto fire has got to be one heavy bitch. Not a plus in my book, but again, auto fire in a handheld weapon is such a low priority for me that it's not even on the list.

I’m just speaking from the perspective as designed and for that purpose. There is a reason the FAL saw 40 years of use and the M14 saw 6.

From a military standpoint the M16 is vastly superior to both and is without a doubt the greatest fighting rifle ever built.

I think I agree but not necessarily in the caliber currently chambered in.

Only if you put a heavy priority on recoil control and overall weight of the kit. In all other aspects it falls well short of the 7.62x51.

Frankly, I do like the modern AR in 5.56 and it would be a toss up if I would grab my AR or my M1a if going into combat, but I do recognize the AR would have a shorter accurate range and less capability to just break ****. On the other hand, it is lighter, more maneuverable and I can put more rounds on target faster with it.

In my original post about which I think is better, I took into account civilian and sporting use of the weapon. In that case, the M14/M1a wins easily.

I might agree with this as long as that term "fighting rifle" is included.
