Massachusetts man in fear of life, shoots killer Golden Retriever

That's the biggest 50# dog I've ever seen.

If it's as reported, good shoot. Keep your animals under control and nobody has to get their feelings hurt. People become decidedly irrational and illogical when it comes to their "furry family members".

Again, I blame Disney and "All Dogs Go To Heaven". Actually, none of them do, including mine (unfortunately).

Chickens aren't livestock.
Serously?
Welcome to the Farm Journal. https://www.agweb.com/livestock/

If it were a smaller dog that could be sent air born by a good kick, I can see not killing it, but if it is bigger and threatens me or my kids, animals, etc, then all bets are off.

I have met a few butt hole golden retrievers and they can be pretty mean and nasty. Something under 20 lbs I could understand, but over that and I see no problems taking it out due to fear.

29 CFR 780.328
§ 780.328 Meaning of livestock.
The term “livestock” includes cattle, sheep, horses, goats, and other domestic animals ordinarily raised or used on the farm. This is further discussed in § 780.120. Turkeys or domesticated fowl are considered poultry and not livestock within the meaning of this exemption.

§ 780.120 Raising of “livestock.”
The meaning of the term “livestock” as used in section 3(f) is confined to the ordinary use of the word and includes only domestic animals ordinarily raised or used on farms. That Congress did not use this term in its generic sense is supported by the specific enumeration of activities, such as the raising of fur-bearing animals, which would be included in the generic meaning of the word. The term includes the following animals, among others: Cattle (both dairy and beef cattle), sheep, swine, horses, mules, donkeys, and goats.

That's a federal rule, which I think trumps some magazine's opinion.

OK. If your mutt comes after my poultry, livestock, my domesticated cat, my domesticated dog, my kids, my wife, or me, your mutt will take a dirt nap, unless it is small enough for me to kick it away. And I will sleep soundly afterwards and enjoy a good supper before going to bed.

Mutts tore up my neighbor's cat into pieces, alive, in front of the 80 old woman, in her yard. I have no love lost for roaming mutts, whatever the reason for their roaming.

And aren't you a cop? So you are telling me you would not shoot a dog that charged you or your partner?

Nope, I would not shoot a dog that wasn't a trained attack dog.

I would shoot a dog that was attacking a child, but's not really what we are discussing here, are we?
