On Thursday, Obama's gun expert, Vice-President Joe "Two Blasts" Biden, announced that the president will use his executive authority and provisions of the Arms Export Control Act to deny future applications, by private importers, to import "surplus military weapons" for sale to private citizens. Lest there be any confusion, in this instance "surplus military weapons" means rifles, pistols and shotguns, and excludes fully-automatics, which haven't been legal to import for sale to private citizens since 1968.

This is the executive order just put in place (to honor the new ATF head-honco) preventing RE-IMPORT of US rifles. It has no effect on the import of foreign rifles like AKs and Mosins, beyond the rules already in place (9.22R and such).

It's aimed directly at the S Korean M1 Garands and Carbines we gave them in the '50s, and that the State dept. already blocked a few years back.

Now that's not to say that they won't try and extend it to cover foreign made 'military' rifles, but that would be very shaky under an 'executive order', since there is already law passed around that (the reason you can't get Norinco AKs anymore).

I'm thinking they would need to change the current laws (which wouldn't make it through the House right now) to have any real effect on foreign-made rifles.

Of course what's so absurd about this whole thing is that the US Government, through the CMP, will happily sell you a Garand that was never sent overseas. Yet somehow after taking a trip to S Korea, these same rifles are somehow too 'dangerous' to be imported.
