My 18 year old asked my to buy him a handgun

Who in this thread or in the OP has EVER suggested that? The bolded part?

No one to my knowledge, but asking someone to purchase a gun, or giving them money is not "gifting". How many meetings with the ATF have you had regarding straw purchases?

None. Therefore I MUST be wrong.
Now you can't give someone money as a 'gift' either? Your point, tenuous that it is, has ZERO to do with the OP.
Everyone knows if someone asks you to buy a gun for them and then PAYS you for it, it is a straw purchase. And no, you can't buy a gun and give it as a gift to a felon regardless of payment. The form is clear. Everyone likewise knows that if your otherwise legally eligible son asks you to buy him a gun for a gift and you do, it's NOT a straw purchase.

OK, carry on. I'll do it my way and you hoe your own row. Don't really care.

Straw purchase.

Don't even think about it!

(My understanding is that he needs to be 21 to buy. If you buy it for him, that would be a straw purchase-and that can get you ten in the slammy!)

Some people may say that you would have to prove "intent" if you bought a gun and then gifted it to an 18 year old. That "intent" would then qualify the transaction as a "straw purchase."

-Well, if things went south-and they decided to prosecute, the "intent" is right there in the OP. I think that is all the proof anyone would need.

Its against the law to buy for someone else regardless if he is your son or not. No handguns to be owned by under 21 year olds. Just saying.

Just sayin, can you cite a law that states it is illegal for someone under the age of 21 to own a handgun? Like maybe an 18 or 19 or 20 year old? So long as they are not a prohibited person? You might want to start with chapter 44 and just start reading. You are grossly misinformed. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/part-I/chapter-44

Hint: It is perfectly legal for a person under the age of 21 (ages 18-20), to own a handgun. They just can not buy one from a dealer. If they are gifted a handgun or purchase a handgun from a private party it is perfectly legal.
