Need a little help with a gun!

I have a friend that wants to sell an old military rifle. I am not well versed
in older firearms. I know it is an ERFURT 1912 Kax98. I am assuming that it is
in 8mm but I am not sur and I cannot find an markings on it about the caliber.
The stock is really dinged up and there are a few rust spots on it. The stock and
all the parts have matching numbers.

Does anybody here know anything about these? What condition they should be in?
How to tell what caliber it is? Or any place I can go to find out more info on it?
