Nephews first .22lr options?

Need some ODT advice if possible. My sister and brother on law agreed to their son getting his first .22 from Uncle Cigarman66. He is 11 and has home property to learn, train and shoot with me.

Suggestions ? Single shot bolt I have read get them focused on target and safety ie Savage Rascal. Thoughts on single vs 10/22 semi at the age?
he is a tall boy - youth length vs regular? I'll have him try my 597 as a test.

Open to to any and all suggestions. Thank you

Not so sure why everyone is so worried about that. I 'assume' you aren't going to let him shoot unaccompanied. Just give him one round at a time. Heck they even make single shot magazines for 10/22's. Buying him something he can use for a long while and will keep. Unfortunately those 'starter' .22's today I don't see being heirlooms.
Having said that, I have an Ithaca model 49. Single shot lever a touch bigger than the 'kids' .22 and if I was 11 I'd think it was about the coolest thing ever. Heck I'm a little older than that and still think it's pretty cool.

I like bolt actions for a starter gun (kids and adults). My daughter loves the Savage .22 bolt action. It teaches the fundamentals of gun control, trigger discipline and firearm function. Plus, it's inexpensive!

Great point. Yes he would only shoot with adult. I would like something he grows up with and can always turn to vs a youth model for a few years. The first one I want to be meaningful and long term. I'll check out the Ithaca.

What? you don't have one to pass down?! Make the sacrifice for a legacy for your nephew. Good excuse to get a new one for yourself, too.

Well, you probably won't find one (out of production).
I'd get a 10/22 and then buy a youth stock. When he grows into it, put the original stock back on. No reason he wouldn't keep that forever.

Since it will be something for him to grow in to, I agree with swamp stomper. 10-22 won't lose value and can be customized as much as an AR

I will tell you I always liked the old pump action .22s. Dont know what kind it was but in highschool my friend had one his dad bought him for his first birthday and it was a blast.
